Le Patin Libre

Le Patin Libre is a group of Canadian, and one French, ex-figure skaters, who create and perform dances on ice skates. It was founded in 2005 by the figure skater Alexandre Hamel. The group created what they regard as a new genre of performing art, called "contemporary skating". The artistic collective is currently composed of five dedicated members: Samory Ba, Jasmin Boivin, Taylor Dilley, Pascale Jodoin, and Alexandre Hamel.〔(Official Site )〕
The group is also politically involved in an effort to re-organize public skating sessions and improve general access to and freedom of motion on public ice surfaces in Montreal, QC, CA.
== History ==
Once described as ''"Disney on Ice with a bonus hint of imagination, artistic expression and technical mastery"'',〔(Article of the daily newspaper "La Presse" ), March 6th 2007 〕 the initial growth of the troupe was linked linked to winter festivals, which are a tradition in the province of Quebec. Exploring skating outside, the troupe was inspired by Montreal's contemporary dance and circus scene.〔
* 2005 : The group Le Patin Libre was founded by a relatively unknown figure skater named Alexandre Hamel. The group was hired to present shows in very small local events centred on the presence of an ice surface.〔
* January 2006 : The group presented its first show in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, a suburb of Montreal, Canada. It visited two other cities during this first tour.〔
* March 2007 : After a second larger tour including a show at the Carnaval de Québec,〔(Official Site of the "Carnaval de Québec" )〕 the group wrote and distributed a manifesto describing its philosophy and its position outside the world of traditional figure skating. The text criticized what they called the rigidity of the Olympic discipline and the lack of inspiration of the show business using its stars. The text was distributed as tracts during illegal performances on public ice rinks of Montreal city.〔Silvia Galipeau, « Patineurs Rebelles », in "La Presse", March 6, 2007, p. 1, 2 et 3 of the “Actuel” cahier., Montreal, Canada〕 A part of the performance was aired on the news bulletin of a national Canadian network.〔
* October 2007 : The group self-produced its first event: "The Halloween Party". The small arena rented by the group sold out. The medieval tale The Pied Piper of Hamelin was adapted into an ice show and the event was centred on a participative public allowed to step on the ice with skates.〔''Un Bal masqué hors de l'ordinaire'', in ''24 H'', November 2nd 2007, p. 16, Montreal, Canada〕
* December 2007 : Sylvain Bouillère, a member of the group, created a Christmas tale on ice during which he played violin while performing a choreography on his own music.〔« Vive le patin libre - Skaters of the Free World », in "Les Nouvelles Saint-Laurent", December 19th 2007, p. 1 et 19, Montreal, Canada〕
* December 2008 : Numbers created by the troupe were premiered in England, through a two city tour by Alexandre Hamel.
